Ionization type smoke detectors are generally cheaper to produce than optical smoke detectors, but these types of detectors are more prone to false alarms than optical smoke detectors. The radiation passes through the ionization chamber - the air-filled space between the two electrodes - and causes a small constant current to flow between the electrodes. Any smoke entering the circle attracts alpha particles that reduce ionization and divide the current, thus triggering the alarm. Americium-241 (Radioactive) is an alpha emitter with a half-life of 432 years. Alpha radiation, which is the opposite of beta and gamma radiation, is used for two additional reasons: Alpha particles have high ionization, so it is enough for air particles to be ionized for a current to exist, and these particles have low penetrating power, so they stay in the air or in the plastic part of the smoke detector. 1% of the radioactive energy of the emitted Americium-241 is gamma radiation. Although it provides effective fire detection due to its radiation content, its use is restricted in our country and Europe.
